Naveena Saraswathi Sabatham - Tickles!

Going by the title of the movie, you would think that Naveena saraswathi sabatham is the remake of the
classic Saraswathi sabatham from the 60’s. But interestingly, the movie seems to be inspired by another
movie from the Sivaji era, Thiruvilayadal.
NSS is the story of 4 men stranded on the beach of a deserted island and how they manage to escape
from the island with Lord Shiva manipulating their fates, and how they learn a lesson about Alcohol and
it’s ill effects, which kinda is the underlying message of the movie. Not very subtle!
The movie opens in “Paralogam” (heaven) where we see modern day Lord Shiva and family, with Lord
Murugan playing Temple run on his iPad, Lord Ganesha and Parvathi going about speaking in English
and Naradha appears with a Guitar in place of veena. There are many such contemporary scenes in the
movie that the director has tried differently. He deserves an appreciation for trying it out.
Jai is back after the success of Raja Rani, as the son of a Sex Drug selling father and continuing the family
business. The scenes involving jai’s father and their family business are a laugh riot. Jai is in love with
Singer Jayashree, played by Niveda Thomas who doesn’t really have much of a role and disappears in
the second half.
Apart from the heroine of the movie, it is an ensemble cast where the Jai and his friends, Sathyan, son of
an MLA, VTV Ganesh as the husband of a Mob leader Sorna ka, and Rajkumar trying to make it as a hero.
VTV Ganesh is the show stealer with his unique voice and the surprise character he plays in the second
half. He keeps the audience awake in the second half in what would otherwise have been a total dismay.
There is a scene in the second half where Naradha asks Shiva to pace up things or audience would start
posting on facebook about the first half being good and the second half being a drab. Sadly, that is the
case with NSS as the second half doesn’t really entertain much.
Venkat prabhu’s cameo deserves a special mention not because he is there but because he ridicules
himself and his movies. Music really doesn’t have much of an impact albeit other parts of the movie like
cinematography.
Verdict – NSS makes you laugh, but that just isn’t enough to make the movie a complete package.
Our Score: 2.5/5
